Rose's Roof - Part 1
I was so stressed on Friday about this project. One because it was calling for rain all day and I had been planning this project for a few weeks and that was the last thing we needed to derail a volunteer group. Two, because as I pick up the materials I quickly realized that 54 sheets of 1/2" OSB is a little more than my dad’s utility trailer can handle and I inch home to my apartment praying that nothing happens. I get home and quickly transfer 10 sheets to the roof rack of my SUV which quickly stressed it to the limits. So, here I am with a trailer that looks like it’s going to collapse and a roof rack that looks like it will explode. But, God is good and everything made it.
As I arrived to the job site on Saturday morning, I thought we had at least a couple hours in the morning before the rain started, but I hadn’t checked the weather that morning yet. My friend Ryan quickly said, we’ve got about a half hour before it starts raining but let’s get started. He was right, about 45min in, it starts raining.
We had 13 people ready to hit it hard first thing and hit it hard we did. All 13 people stayed until lunch in which we got one entire side of the roof tore off and re-sheathed despite the couple hours of light rain we worked in. The roof was pretty bad on this side and a couple of people stepped through and one guy twisted his knee, but kept working just as hard.
Lunch came and we all took a break. After lunch we lost a handful of people and gained a couple for the afternoon. After lunch we hit the tear off on the other side and get all the shingles ripped off in under 2 hours, which is moving pretty quickly. Once we got that done, we lost another few people to the afternoon activities and a smaller group kept rockin.
By 8pm, just Ryan and I were left. We were able to get both side weather tight and ready to shingle. Ryan showed me how to shingle by getting the first 6 rows down for me to go back this week to work.
All in all, God is good. He aligned the right people to be there for the right amount of time and for all the supplies to be provided. I was deeply impacted by the efforts and attitudes of everyone. People gave up their Saturday to get wet, dirty, twist a knee, and be on a roof NOT because they thought it was the right thing to do, but because of who they are in Christ and responding to that.
We’re not done. We’ll be hitting it again next weekend to get finished up.
