Breakfast with Tom

I got the privilege to have breakfast with our new mayor, Tom Henry this morning as part of Love In Deed’s monthly executive director’s breakfast. He came to speak to us about what’s moving forward in the city and share a few of his personal initiatives to be taken on in 2008. He also reported on the recent Indiana Property Tax Bill that was passed.

He spoke a lot on what new economic development projects are going on  such as Harrison Square. I’ll be happy to report everything is on track and is on or under budget. I’m sure this will either enrage some or be exciting for other depending on your support on the project. I’m in favor for it for the simple reason that the city is trying to take an development interest in the downtown corridor.

Unfortunately for us in the social services, the recent tax bill is going to effect how much money the city has available through block grants and how much we can apply for. This new tax bill is going to, as Tom put it, put the city at about a $14 million deficit due to the nature of the tax. It’s going to greatly reduce what amount the city gets from property tax. So, needless to say, everyone heart sank a little at the notion that we aren’t sure that the city will play much a part in funding our organizations for the next couple of years. Luckily, NLFW does not currently operate on any of the city’s dollars. Unfortunately, it prevents a potential funding source.

I’ll continue to support the city and it’s leadership even if I don’t quite understand their decision making process. Just another reason for us to remain faithful in the God who provides all things.

Other notes… Thanks to Gina over at Allen County Council on Aging, our project board got a nice boost of projects. Check em out and help a neighbor.

Peace
