Here are a few tips from the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service Allen County Office offers for shopping at a farmers market or produce stand:

♦Bring cash, as many can’t process credit cards.

♦Also bring your own canvas bags or clean, recycled plastic bags.

♦Either bring a cooler or go straight home after shopping. A hot car can turn “fresh” into wilted or over-ripe in a short time.

♦Don’t take a list. See what’s ripe and buy it, and then plan your meals around the purchased produce.

♦Make it a family affair. Take your kids so they can try new foods and perhaps learn more about where food comes from.
