TRP Hosting English As a New Language Training

Here is info from The Reclamation Project about upcoming training to become an English as a New Language trainer. TRP is a local nonprofit that works with the local refugee population. The training would be great if you have a desire to work with refugees, including the large Burmese population here in Fort Wayne.

Ivy Tech and The Reclamation Project will be hosting a “Train The Trainer" class offered through a federal ORR grant.

This class is designed for English as a New Language volunteers who want to improve their English teaching and will include training with the Oxford Picture Dictionary curriculum as well as curricula used by the participants.

Description:
Topics of the class include educational theory and practical issues such as how to use the textbook efficiently, how to meet the needs of the students, how to properly assess the students, how to construct a lesson plan, and how to include all four language skills into your lessons.

The lessons will be every Thursday evening beginning May 13
6:00 to 8:30 pm for four weeks
(May 13, 20, June 3, 10. Note: no class on May 27.)

This class will be a hybrid class, meaning the group will meet once a week for 2.5 hours and then each individual will spend another 2.5 hours every week creating activities, lessons and discussions online. Don’t worry if you have little experience online because you will be taught how to use the website and how to create the required material.
Importantly, your email address and access to the Internet every week is required for this class. Most of the 2.5 hours outside of class will be spent on our website creating online discussions with your classmates, creating activities for your classmates to look at, and responding to your classmates’ activities. If you do not have an email address, you can create one for free at yahoo.com or from mail.google.com. Also, if you don’t have Internet, libraries offer free Internet services.
