That's Loving Your Neighbor!

Sometimes our volunteers take on projects that are way beyond their skill level and their original commitment level. When a volunteer gets in over their head, it’s usually a great test of their character. Either they’ll bail on the project or they’ll stick with it for as long as it takes to get it done regardless of how uncomfortable it is. 

That’s the case of Coach Brandon. Brandon took on his first project last year, which started out as a house painting project for a woman name Sharla that was facing pressure from Code Enforcement. What Brandon didn’t know going into the project was that painting was just one part of the list of improvements Sharla needed to make to satisfy Code. 

Brandon stuck with it and was able to get the house painted last fall and committed to finding a way to get the garage that was falling down either fixed or torn down. Getting the house painted bought Sharla and Brandon some time from Code, but that time was running out. 

Sharla had until August 11th to get her garage take care of. That’s exactly what Brandon did.

Brandon, with the help of NeighborLink, the City of Fort Wayne, and a generous group of guys from Fellowship Missionary Church who came with a Bobcat took that garage down and had it cleaned up in 2 hours!

It’s people like Brandon and all the guys that showed up to help that makes our community a better place to live. It’s not every day that people are willing to give up their time and use their own equipment to help people like Sharla catch a break, miss a fine she wouldn’t have been able to pay, reduce the pressure on our City officials, and ultimately keep Sharla in her house. 

A couple of hours on a Saturday morning and a whole lot of selflessness by a group of people saved someone’s house.
