Serve Beyond the Surface // Blog by Hilary

I am a few weeks into working with Andrew and NeighborLink.  We are working on doing a lot of planning in the next couple of months.  Andrew and I meet every Monday to discuss and catch up on the many aspects of NeighborLink.  More so, we talk about anything else that comes to mind at that time.  He is really steering me in the right direction.  I trust him and what he has to say and it’s nice to have someone, other than best friends, to talk to and listen to.  So far, I have just contributed to the writing and listening part of my internship, which I do love.  I will continue to write through out this internship.  I like the idea of being able to write how I feel out on paper.  Andrew and I talked about the importance of doing so.  Capturing your thoughts at that very instant leaves a document or a record behind that could have been lost forever.

The many volunteers of NeighborLink serve, but not just that.  One of NeighborLink’s goals, I believe, is to train the server to go deeper than just the service acts.  It’s about training one to be able to get inside his or her head on a level that is barely traveled to.  It’s not just going through the motions.  It’s asking oneself how he feels at that moment.  It can become a very personal experience.  As humans we can always just stay on the surface.  But God has given us the luxury and the gift to go way beyond that.  I challenge everyone to try just that.  Before doing any kind of service allow yourself to mentally open up and think more freely.  More may come to mind than you think…
