I’m participating in Real Men Read again this year as part of United Way’s Learn United program. This program had over 230 men last year reading to 2nd & 3rd grade students last year in Allen County with the sole purpose of being positive male role models who are willing to engage in closing the 3rd grade reading gap of our area children. Studies have shown that if a kid doesn’t have a handle on reading by 3rd grade, that very few will ever catch up and will be behind throughout their entire schooling.

This picture highlights the remaining places Real Men are needed at schools in Fort Wayne and New Haven.

The total commitment is 5 hours that breaks down to 1 hour a month in October, November, January, February and March.

Please make time for this. Any issues we would condemn our schools on, we can play a part in making better, and this is one of those.

You can even register online.

Side Note……

Where are all the young men under 40 or even under 30 making a difference in our communities? This morning I sat in an orientation meeting with 25+ men and maybe 4 of us were under 40 years old and everyone was a career man, meaning they all had day jobs. I also didn’t see any pastor or church leader I recognized either.

What’s up with that?
