Great Volunteers Step In

I continue to be amazed by the generosity and consideration of NeighborLink volunteers.

Last week I received a lot of phone calls. Some tougher than others, but nothing compares to one of the last one I got.

At about 1pm on Friday I received a call from a gentleman who had 7 days to leave his apartment because he was getting evicted by a new owner of the apartment he’s lived in for over 10 years. This guy has battled stomach and intestinal cancer, has MS and has diabetes. Prior to this past year, he spent 5 years in bed and in the process lost most of the things that mattered to him.

At NeighborLink, we don’t always do great with emergency situations because of the way we’re set up and crisis is just difficult. But, I’m never unaware of the power of the Holy Spirit to orchestrate things that matter the most.

Luckily, I knew a local church was organizing their monthly service day on Saturday and contacted them to see if they could pick up the project and help this guy get moved. By God’s grace, they had extra people to place and with a few rearrangements, made it happen.

Here is the team that I served with on Saturday to help get this guy moved and I couldn’t be more proud of how these volunteers stepped in and helped out on Saturday. The team even went out to lunch with him so he could share his appreciation and everyone had a great time in fellowship.

Unfortunately, the project still goes on. This gentleman has to still be out of his apartment by the end of the week and is in need of temporary housing. He’s a veteran and is working with the VA to buy a house and has a few weeks until that happens.

So, if you know of housing options, please let me know. For now, I’m going to turn him onto 211 to get started.

Interesting tidbit. This guy is an internationally published poet and author. He read a few of his poems to us on friendship at the end and they were beautiful.

More than anything, this guy needs some regular folks to check in on him and befriend him.
