First Project! // Blog by Hilary
This weekend I got to participate in my first NeighborLink project!! I was so excited last week. Going into it, I really had no idea to expect. I wondered how many people would be there, what they would be like, and what the family we were helping would be like. A lot of thoughts ran through my head so by Saturday morning I was hyped to see what it was all about. We would be helping move a small family from an apartment to a house.
I actually got there late, which isn’t like me. I seriously went up and down the street looking for this moving truck probably a good 13 and a half times then I realized on the email, it said to go in to the apartment complex. Way to go Hilary! Haha Anyways, I got there, introduced myself to Jeff and some of the other men, and got right to work. This is a small world for sure. A girl I previously volunteered with was also there helping out, so that was fun!
We moved quite a bit of stuff in a very short amount of time. A lot of hands sure do help and get things going fast. I think we may have moved in record time. Working on a job like this sure is personable. You meet the person you are helping that first day and then leaving the project, you feel like you’ve known them for quite some times. You are moving their personal belongings. It was really neat to be a part of such. I remember being in the freezing cold loading up boxes. Cold and Hilary do not mix. But that day, it didn’t matter; it wasn’t an issue. I was helping someone out so much and it was such a great feeling. Helping people is not just helping them, it’s helping you too. It feels great inside and you learn a lot. I wonder why not everyone in the world would just help each other out. Hey, maybe one day : )
Overall, very successful. We made it to the family’s new house and got done in less than 3 hours. We prayed for them and really just thanked God for allowing us to be able to help them. Everyone there was so positive. The mom was so appreciative and kind to all of us. I met some great people that day and I am excited to help out more. I vividly remember smiling so much that day, even when I left the project…
