A Story Worth Telling
I had a really great breakfast today with a group of retired guys that have been meeting for months. They gather for breakfast and then go out and do NeighborLink projects. I’ve talked about this group of guys before, but they keep surprising me by their commitments to serving and building relationships with the recipients.
Today I was stuck by one gentlemen in particular that has been volunteering with these guys, but I haven’t thought of this until today yet.
This guy has stomach cancer.
He’s been going through treatments for over a year and the long-term prognosis isn’t that great, but he shows up each week and sometimes twice a week to join the other guys for brotherhood and to GIVE of himself on behalf of others. His enthusiasm is contagious and we talked today about a fundraising idea to bring additional funds into NeighborLink to get projects done. He’s full of energy and excitement when it comes to loving others.
He could easily be resting in the doom and gloom of his situation but he doesn’t. He’s more optimistic by his God-given purpose in this world than ever.
He’s got a story worth telling and he uses it to encourage those he serves to continue to fight through their own story and situation.
If you’re down and out right now due to life’s circumstances, remember this guy’s story. You can make a difference no matter what your situation. It’s up to you to choose.
